A biodata gets forwarded far beyond the family you send it to. Here's what to leave out - and the mistakes that make a good profile look careless.
Leave out (privacy)
- Aadhaar, PAN or passport numbers. There's no reason any family needs them at this stage.
- Your full house address. City and locality are enough.
- Personal phone numbers of the person if parents prefer to screen calls - give the parent's number.
- Salary slips or bank details.
Leave out (legal)
- Anything about dowry, gifts or "expectations" of the other family's contribution. Giving, taking or demanding dowry is an offence under the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 - and a biodata mentioning it is a red flag for any sensible family.
Leave out (it hurts more than it helps)
- Complexion and weight descriptions.
- Very long lists of hobbies or every certificate course.
- Claims you can't back up - an income you don't earn, a degree not finished.
- Caste or sub-caste - unless it genuinely matters to your family; many now leave it out.
- The full kundli page - share it when a family asks.
Common mistakes
- Age instead of date of birth - the age becomes wrong in a few months.
- Height in only one unit - give feet-inches and cm.
- Old or group photos.
- Phone screenshots of a Word file - send a PDF.
- Wrong horoscope details copied from memory. Our biodata maker calculates rashi, nakshatra, gan, nadi and manglik from the birth details.
- Expectations that read like demands ("must earn 30 LPA, must have own house in Delhi"). Write preferences: "well-settled in a stable career, Delhi NCR preferred."
- Inconsistent facts between the biodata and what parents say on the phone.
Our tool's "Before you send" check flags all of these.
